Hello, yes I'm a newby, and I always had a beetle or bay camper when I was a young buck, but for the last 15 years I've strayed, and drove boring every day vehicles, that when you look under the bonnet you just scratched your head, and now, Ive been reborn, and want to capture the magic of the VW world with my 4 kids and lovely wife, who insists that the van i get must have 6 seat belts,  is that a tall order or what? If anyone is looking for a good home for a van with 6 belts in good condition, please let me know.

Doug

 :wave

Hi Doug and :welcome

6 seat belts wouldn't be a tall order....but you may have to consider getting some installed yourself.  Not a big deal, but you won't have a long list if you only go and see buses that already have belts on 6 seats  ;)
From memory, perhaps Mushroom can confirm, my brother's old Westie Joker had lots of seating and many seatbelts (my brother's old bus belonged to Mushroom before him)...Mush were those standard belts or did you put them in?  Either way, that model of Westfalia Joker might be good one to look for...lots of seating, so lots of possiblities for you Doug ;)

You might find the forum a little quiet for the next 8 days or so  :tumbleweed , as many of the active forum members are off on the Eireball Run...But I'm sure people will be more than happy to advise you when they are all back home.

You'll find more info on the Eireball Run in the 'Whats Happening' section....and if you are anywhere near any of our overnight stops do feel free to come along and say  'Hi' :thumbsup

;) Hi all. I just registered. I'm guessing you'll all consider me a bit of a phillistine as I don't own anything aircooled apart from my ducati monster :).

However I am a VW fanatic and I have a great interest in owning an aircooled 4 wheel machine in the near future. My dream car is a German look beetle with Porsche underpinnings.
I am the current owner of an 01 LHD VW Eurovan - the US version of the T4 Caravelle. I havn't seen one here, since I brought it back from the states in 2005 where I used to live. I've since added to this a 94 T4 Caravelle that was abandoned in a back garden in Crumlin- I've swopped out the seized engine and it's just gone in for new paint  - black stealth mode.... I've made a few mods and will post pics as soon as I have them. The reason for the second van is prractical. We have six kids, 6 boy ,5 girl, twin boys that are 3 and twin girls 3months. Squirming in and out of regular cars is not going to cut it in our gaff.

ON the VW vein of things I have owned and worked on and on and on and on - on a Porsche 944 turbo - which I bought at auction in the states for less than a phone bill...it was on flats and not running when I dragged it home. I'm a regular masochist when it comes to giving myself more work, but thats my gig. The bike will be back up and running shortly as I'm moving back into the city with the job. Will post pics soon. P.S THERE'S A T4 Transporter commercial van AT DUFFYS BREAKERS YARD ON THE LONG MILE ROAD - WITH DIGITAL CLOCKS, IT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL THERE AND NOT IN BAD SHAPE AT ALL FOR SEATS ETC., I PULLED THE TOWBAR AND SOME FOGLIGHTS OFF IT ON THE WEEKEND SO IT SHOULD STILL BE THER IF ANYONE IS LOOKING FOR PARTS.

Hi,
I have a '73 Bay, green and white with a Westphalia conversion. The bus hangs out in Kerry mostly and has just had a good dose of TLC on its innards (engine, brakes, wiring) and is running very well now. We've had it 3 years now and bought it from a friend up north who owned it for the 13 years previous to that.
I'll pop up a picture when I dig out a good one (and work out how).
dB.

welcome Damian and Haggis! It'll be quiet around here for the rest of the week as a lot of the regulars are otherwise occupied with the Eireball run :)

Haggis, that black stealth T4 sounds good, throw up some pics when you get it home. Take a look at my website for my beetle with Porsche running gear etc...  www.veewrx.com
Title: Re: Newbies introduce yourself!
Post by: haggis100 on August 05, 2008, 10:17:50 PM
I'd love to have a look  at the beetle, I'm gonna check your link now.. My biggest enemy is time... It's 9.55 or thereabouts and I'm thinking of painting the shed... yeah.

I checked in on the van today, while dropping off a re-wound starter and new battery for the 944. The 944 has had a cosmetic overhaul on the outside at least. I changed all the belts and hoses and a lot of the seals, throttle body, rocker cover gaskets etc., etc but the three year plan is to pull the engine and have a good look inside - possibly replace some of the innards and the cam with fresh stuff. From there the skys the limit - all the way to the divorce court... check out www. lindseyracing.com for a bit of engine eye candy!!! really nice stuff there for porsches of all generations.

ANYWAY - back to the van. I got fibreglass bumpers from Poland on e-bay for it ( I have to point out that I'm not trying to turn this into some sort of plastic iceberg subaru clone van... as I think the bumper change probably gives that impression. This is  (I hope) going to be a very cool understated BLACK VWT4 - black, black black - they're one piece and it looks like I'm going to have to do a bit of frankensteining with the front bumper to get it to fit properly. The U.S van I have is the 2.8 V6 (VR6) narrow angle and has the "long nose" of the t4. This is the one with the slightly more angled headlights and all the creature comforts in side.
The bumpers I got for the 94 van would fit this "long nose" bang on, but the 94 is the flatter nosed version - more like the commercial van. I don't want to "pimp" the van, but rather go for a subtle look, so I'm having it painted with the same two pack metallic (very subtle) charcoal black Porsche paint that was used on the 944. This is partly because there's some left over and also because it's a nice colour and the metallic with glosscoat will last a long, long time. I don't want to bore you all to tears with the van so I'll just post some "progress" pics over the next few days.

As a byline, I do a sideline in renting commercial units locally and as a result I've let out several commercial units to guys in the motor trade, paint, auto electrical business, meaning I can legitemately mix business and pleasure!. I've a really good guy in the Rathcoole area who has done a lot of work for me on my own bits and pieces and he does a lot of work on VW's/ Audi's and all the other german cars at very keen prices. If anybody wants more information please send me a message and I'll pass on his number and you can take it from there. I'm looking for a set of wheels to set off the T4. I'm thinking a set of polished FUCH's or FUCH's with black centres if I drop the van a bit I think it'll set it off, or a set of Audi A6 5 flat spoke as these would be a bolt straight on job and could be picked up for around 350 ish mark. I'm thinking paint the flat bar spokes or have them poly coated in matt black entirely, or just the spokes and leave the rims polished alloy?? too many choices.... Anyone with other idea's for the wheels/ rubber let me know as I want to do something a little bit different with this. Thanks for listening to my motoring madness. Gotta check your site. Out for now. Haggis.

Hi everybody, not been on the forum for quite a while now, used to be Moonraker Mick on the  last one. How is everyone keeping? I hope all the bugs & bus's are still all up & running and in fine fettle. We've still got the 72 Devon and is still running well but does need a bit of work on the front nearside wheel arch, I think it will be a new arch & respray, after the summer   ::) ::) I think.

Hi all, erm, I'm George

Had registered some years ago but I see the site has been re-installed and I cant remember what I might have called myself in the last incarnation anyway. Im sure I was toying with getting a bus back then as its always been a 'one day' thing with me.

I'm - or was - a Mini man, the car, not my height or inseam measurement - but even thats a bygone thing for me. I have one left, the 'hopefully my kids will learn to drive in it' machine. Ive a BMW bike and Ive just arrived back from 5 months surfing my way around the continent in my '73 Range Rover. I spent 6 months before my trip converting it to Td5 (LR's last inhouse designed 5 cyl diesel engine)

I travelled back from Portugal in convoy with some Dutch pals I met down there. They were driving a '76 helsinki bay.  It rekindled my age old hankering...

Sooo

Im looking for a crap heap and by crap heap I mean a perfectly restored early bay or better yet a split screen for less then a grand :D. Dont care if its a van or a camper.

Anyway, Im back on here to keep my eye out and once I'm in ownership Im sure Ill be busting your collective balls for info during my resto.

George

PS - theres a guy here looking to swap his Pete Lawson shortboard for something a little more learner friendly, the Lawson is a real good board, owner - dont sell it short! Potential owner - snap it up!

I've finally got my 75 bay on the road. Mechanically she was a bit of a mess when i got her 8 months ago but now she's out of car hospital and driving like a dream.  :) So, i'm quite new.

Your an astute administrator:) thats the very one, iv had a couple of  mark 1 golfs before this but had to get rid due to increasing fuel prices, bought the t25 as a project but a new contract in work meant that il be out of the country a good bit of the year.. so im thinking now i should get one thats already restored and have her ready for when i am in the country:)

Hi Volks

I'm new to the scene and the campervan lifestyle. I bought a 1990 1.6TD Hi-Top and I originally christened her Matilda, now she's been rechristened Christine after that devil car in that old classic Steven King/Spielberg Movie. To cut a long story short I and her are in dire need of a good mechanic in the Greater Belfast area. Both belts are off her, alternator to water pump, water pump to chrank pulley(I think). I left her into a local garage for them to be replaced and needless to say it was a bolloxed job.

The Bus is now off the road, well outside the front door, It isn't going anywhere for the meantime. If anyone out there knows of a knowledgeable VW mechanic please let me know.

Happy trails

Allan

It's just one headache after another with this devil bus

Looks like you're trying to upload a photo from your own computer.  You need to have the photo hosted online first, on a hosting site such as Photobucket.com

Finally found a fella outside Saintfield who will sort out some of my other problems, namely heating/cooling and if possible, fitting my 2nd hand epersbacher which will be a great addition.

Cheers for the help and advice, mucho appreciated indeedy folks.

Happy trails pilgrims

Howdy all,

Just brought a lovely camper to Co Kerry from Co Derry. A 1976 Devon conversion, totally original and never been welded. Even the curtains are original. Needless to say, I am chuffed to bits and looking forward to this summer. It has already made a difference to quality of life because of the number of salutes and laughs received on the road! Tis bright yellow, after all!!! I look forward to meeting a few of you offline!

Dougie

PS Would love to post a few pics of it but can't figure out how to do so!

Welcome Eddy, your bug is in fact a 1303 model, the curved windscreen gives it away. If it has a 1600 engine and disk brakes on the front, it's a 1303S.

How'd you manage the insurance issue, it was difficult for me at your age, I had to wait til I turned 21 to get insured :(
Title: Re: Newbies introduce yourself!
Post by: 1302bug on April 01, 2009, 08:22:58 PM
ah so  the letter "s" means its got a 1600

cool so its a 1303 then  , im not insured on it yet , my dad is though . and then i take it around sandyford industrial estate on the weekends ( not illegal ! lol )

i need to do my full licence before i can drive it , il b able to get on it as a second driver with quinns insurance once ive done my full

is it true that everyone on here owns more than one bug ??
Title: Re: Newbies introduce yourself!
Post by: trev on April 01, 2009, 09:01:44 PM
The "S" means that it *should* have a 1600, god only knows how it's been changed around over the years.

Not everyone owns more than one, but they're like after eights, one is never enough ;D

Most people here have vans, some have bugs too and others just have bug(s)...

I feared the LHD at the start, but once you get used to it its fine to drive.  You just have to be a lot more careful with overtaking, which in these vans isn't too common  :D ,

Hello

Im Jamesie and Im a splittyaholic. I have a 1966 rhd lowered splitty that was imported to Engeland about 5 years ago from South Africa. I am not good at actually doing anything with the van - I just like to stop at traffic lights and smile when everyone wants to take a photograph. I do a good Queen wave.

I bought it 3 years ago and unfortunately 4th gear turned in to porridge about 9 months ago and some 'person' who fixes motors assured me he could sort it, took out the engine about 8 months ago and I have not managed to get this 'person' to come back and finish the job. ( For 'person' please feel free to insert suitable noun and accompanying adjectives of your choice ) Looking forward to getting back on the road for the summer.

I am living in Rostrevor now and will be touring Ireland asap if I can get it fixed and hope to make new friends in every corner. Like a laugh and a pint and a song too- if you want to be my friend on myspace you can pick me up and hear some of a my songs at www.myspace/jamescolmancurran    i think!

hi

im nikki, a student  :P

i have very little cash this is very evident in the car i drive and share with my mother lol... its a 92' nissan micra, its rusty, its in no way water proof, the seals around the door are falling off, its got no power steering, the springs or whatever in the drivers chair stick out like crazy, the interior lights dont work, and the exhaust makes an alein noise... but still after 3 years of use its never once broken down guess we will wait untill it does to start fixing it!! You cant say a micra is nothing but reliable!! but even still im so ashamed driving it... all i get from the mother is what more do ya want it takes ya from A to B ....

what more could i want eh?? jayzus ... lol   ::)

lookin for a resto project to work on lookin for something in the VW family

time aint the issue its the money... got max of 1000 (this will literally wipe out my bank account) but anything cheapish and restorable would be great !! I figure during these cash strapped times i might be able to find something reasonable, a bus would be great...

been searching the net and havnt seen much on our emerald isle untill gasp i came accross this lovely site , very nice, very informative  ;D

I know diddly squat  about automobiles but i have a willing father and a ginormous family of semi intelligent men and a friend with a mechanic for a brother, so we will call it a family project for now, id want to have it completed by the time im finished college im a first year so ive another 3 years to go... i figure doing it bit by bit slowly but surely ill get there!

anyone know of any cheap restoration deals, basically i just need whatever it is to run... please let me know!!

Hi everyone,

My name is frank. Lazydog put me onto the site. I've been looking to buy a camper for a whille now. I decided to rent one first as a test drive (thats where lazydog comes in) and loved every minute of it. I've been searching the net for a decent camper to buy.

As a newbie to the scene i'll probably be hounding you all for advice, so apologies beforehand.  ;)

Hi I am Sally and we met some members on Saturday in Johns field and can I say you made us feel very welcome so thanks for that. We have a 1967 green and white split that we have had for a over a year but have only been driving for the last few months. We are hoping to get to know some people with the same interest as us plus doing some weekends etc :)

@Devo - can't wait to see your van, sounds fab!

and Sky99 - congrats on your purchase (but where are the pics?) - unfortunately insurance for under 25's is an age-old problem (no pun intended) have a look around the FAQ section for some insurance pointers.

Hello all!
I have been looking around this site for a while now but this is my first post. Back in March when i joined i was looking to buy a Beetle then changed my mind and started looking at Carpi's, anyway i ended up buying an e30 BMW. Now my third midlife crisis has hit (I bought a '77 z650 three years ago that was my first) I have to get a bus before I'm 40, one year to go. I missed a 73 bay for under E500 two weeks ago, I'm still grieving. Anyway the hunt goes on. Aidan (from just outside Nenagh) 8)

Hey Tom,
Na only learning myself too and Im sure I'll learn a lot more when I get her  ;)
She's still at the garage, they're still working on her. Should have her in a few wks.
She's in great knik alright, being from western U.S. I'd say she has a great little story
with her. Ah you'll have great fun with her, you'll get great advice on here anyway.
They really know their stuff, it scares me but Im sure we'll learn fast. You'll get plenty
ideas for colours on the net too!! Thinkin original colours or flashy? Maybe bright purple! :D
Is the wiring in her bad did you mean??
Title: Re: Newbies introduce yourself!
Post by: brian raftery on September 22, 2009, 12:01:45 PM
Hi Tom your van looks the same as mine (apart from the colour >:D) and mine started out as a panel van and got a Devon conversions http://www.devonmoonraker.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/sales-brochure.html (ftp://http://www.devonmoonraker.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/sales-brochure.html) So your roof pops up straight and has two pull out hammock/bunks and the louvered window has two openings.

Good luck with the work, start on the front and work back eg front panel, wheel arches, doors, sills, back arches etc don't forget to change all your pertol lines and hoses.

Thanks a mill Brian,

Thats fantastic....i have finally learned what type of van it is!!....ha..so thats what the two side sleeves inside are for!!!!excellent ;D ;D ;D...someone asked me that saturday and i just went blank!! ;D ;D

Anyway yeah im looking forward to getting dug into it now. Thanks for the tips. will follow them and start from the front.

Hi Sky99,

Thats sounds great...id say your counting down the days till the first big journey with her!! :D

Well the wiring should be fine bar a few lights not working here and there but i want to also find out what i can install that if im sitting somewhere for the night i would still have some sort of power..will find something hopefully!!!as with the colour i have a number of them in mind but havent decided....others are saying to keep the pink!!! :-\

Cheers Wullie, every day's a school day :teacher

For some reason I thought it was just T25/T3's that were called Bullis  :)

Hi, I'm David, new to the Camper scene, interested in buying one in the not too distant future but not sure which one to get
Tempted to go for a Type T5 for the comfort but like the look of the T2
Got a book called "The little book of Camper van" + Campervan crisis DVD in Easons for a tenner which has sparked my interest.
Is it possible to get a camper of any type for under ten grand?

Hi all,
Already posted a few times but never thought to introduce myself on this thread (how rude) anyway my names john and about a month ago finally got my first bus after falling in love with my cousins splitty about 20 years ago, although finances stopped me from buying a splitty  so i got a 1980 devon pop top. The bus needs work but hopefully will be ready to roll for the summer (fingers crossed) and can then enjoy many happy weekends away....hmmmm... me the girlfriend the 2 girls and the 4 dogs  :-\ ::)

Hey John,

Congrats on your new van...I'm new myself and have a 78 devon pop top for the last few months. Have you any pics of yours?
I have the same sort of plan as yourself as in getting the bus ready before the summer...you'll get plenty of info on this forum if your stuck anyway...havent really taken full advantage of that yet as i havent done much on the van yet!! :-[
Anyway you'll find some pics of mine on the link below!!(don't let the colour distract you  ;))

hey tom
your van looks cool (though i would definately go for a colour change), i wanted a bay but just could,nt afford one and then spotted a t25 parked up for sale round the corner from me, it was owned by an old man who had it from new but had recently died and his son had no use for it, i got it for 1350 euro so was well chuffed, o.k she needs a bit of work but on the whole the old man had really looked after it, will be putting up progress pics in the near future.

Title: Re: Newbies introduce yourself!
Post by: corkbay on February 17, 2010, 12:04:42 AM
Brian, the picture is deceiving! it has a good few spots of rust on the body, cab steps and the undercarraige....it's getting the structural stuff sorted at the moment....interior is basic.....a full width rock n roll bed and an 80's domestic kitchen unit, will try and get a pic up. I'm only after buying it so the plan is to do it up in stages as the finances allow!

Regards,
Peter

PS - anyone know any good classic coachwork repair & spraying place in Cork / Munster for quotes?

We came over to Ireland in the bus last year to see the inlaws (Orla's a West Cork girl) and travelled round the South Coast and had a fantastic time. I'd post some pictures but not sure how to do it. We're thinking of coming back over for Eireball.

Howdie folks
Just thought I'd join up and say hello as the wife and myself are planning a trip over in June.
There's a thread I've started on Vzi

http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=641757

And as I was pointed in this direction I thought it would be rude not to say hi  ;)

I'll start a new thread to save any clutter in this section  :)

Cheers

Steve

Well Hello!

I'm dreaming of a late 60's, early 70's restored Westy. It's a long term goal as I'm in the 'R' club like most people, so I'm devoting my time to saving for my campervan dream and learning all there is to know about them so I know how to treat her right. Looking forward to chatting with you all soon xox

Thanks for the comments guys.  :)  To answer your question Compleat idiot, the bus was done up by Cosy Classics in Rathcoole.  You can choose from an option of layouts and if you take a look on their website (www.cosyclassics.ie) you can buy the individual furniture items and fit them yourself, or they will fit them for you.  I do know of one instance when they copied a Devon rear facing buddy seat (it had a headrest) for a customer so I guess they could build pretty much what you want also.   :)

Hi, I'm Gerry and I've had a 1983 t25 for a few years now which I use on a daily basis. I just got a 1.6 td 1986 left hand drive which I'm doing up to do some serious travelling in with my wife and daughter. Hoping to have it ready for the Eireball to give it a good test run. I'm looking for some small windows to install in the high-top: it doesn't have any. Any ideas?

Sadly won't make the eireball this year but hope to join them at some stage in the week. Not sure how to insert a picture but it can be seen in the spotted section at the Fingal show.

Hi folks,

I've been lurking here for a while so thought I should introduce myself!

I have a water cooled 1988 T25 tin-top with rock'n'roll bed, sink, fridge, etc. It was originally sold in the UK as a panel van, but was converted at some stage and then imported into Ireland as a camper some years ago. I picked it up last June and had four great weekends away in it with the wife and kids. Am looking forward to doing some work on it in preparation for the Summer (fuel lines, brakes, service).

Cheers,
Dibble.

Hi folks!

Just joined here today.
The name is Graham and I am from Cork.

I do not own a VW at present, but am a big fan of older German cars. (Currently have a 1991 BMW e30 318is).

I was pointed in the direction of this site as I am looking to source an old VW camper to use as a wedding car in September. I created a thread there for it so won't go into it here.

Looking forward to looking around the site and seeing what is going on and what is out there.
Am a big fan of camping (tents) and hope to try out the whole camper van ownership at some stage in my life and do the rounds of the countries campsite.

Cheers,
Graham

Hi all,

I am new to the site.
I have launched a VW suppliers index called aircooledfools.com, and have advertised Type 2 Ireland in our forums section. We have a club section too, and I would love to hear what you guys get up to over there.

There seems to be a lack of suppliers over in Ireland....... or maybe they are just well kept secrets. I am looking to offer 1 years free subscription on my site to any VW Yodas, mechanics or resto specialists. If you know anyone who fits the bill, drop me a line at jester@aircooledfools.com

Loving the forum :)

Not much hope there for 1000 euro!

I think what you need to realise is that these old vans are a bit thin on the ground and are much sought after, so what chance do you think you have in getting a decent one for 1000 euro? I admire your cause but it will be tough going,

You probably wouldnt get scrap for 1000, I have a T4 Mulitvan for sale on here but its more like 3500 its got a bed function table and factory fitted curtains and is 100 percent bang on and is my current daily driver!

I know there was a chap on here selling a T3 Panel van for 1000 not so long ago!!

Good luck!

We had a similar post on here not so long ago with lad looking to fullfil his dream!

I would say I'm pretty enthusiastic about this.  I think I'll have to get a few quid more though.  I'll hold out for the right t3 t25.

Yeah you could be a few years looking into this!

A basic hunk of junk will set you back a few quid, maybe 2-3 grand then leave aside a 1ooo or so for repairs!

Id also like to sell my van to more an enthusiast!  ;)

How on earth do you judge that he's not an enthusiast Dermot  ???

He's clearly looked for, and found, a VW camper forum.
He know's enough to differentiate between a T2 and a T3...and also that the desired T2 is likely to need a much bigger budget.  And that a T3 matching his needs is also going to need a bigger budget.
Reading between the lines I fugure he knows that his present budget isn't going to get him much...unless he's looking for a headache...but to claim he's not enough of an enthusiast to be good enough to buy your van...well that's just plain silly in my book ???

Maybe I'm just picking at a hole where there is no hole, because I'm tired & cranky after 4 days at Vantastival, but I thought that was a very strange comment from you, bordering on being condescending!?

Anyway, :welcome iwaw  to T2i :wave you should get plenty of good, constructive advice here ;) ...but firstly you are most likely going to need to stretch your budget a little more  ;)...unless you want a world of headaches...but I think you know that already  ;D

Thanks for the welcome!  Yeah I've always had an interest in the vw's, how could you not.   So I'm reckon I'll get one during the summer, and I 'll try stretch to about 2000-2500 for a reasonable t3 and I might just have a look across the water to widen my search.  I'm pretty handy working with vehicles and certainly not afraid to tackle a problem, so I'll be getting a workshop manual when I get a Wagon and doing most, hopefully all of the work myself. Thanks again ex-2cv-er! :)

Thanks for the welcome!  I've seen the first one already, just a pity it doesn't have the rest of its back.  And the second one the LT is a big beast of a thing and it reminds me of an aul trawler inside, which I like by the way.  It's just a bit too big for me at the moment.  I appreciate the help though, and keep em coming if you see any more t3's. All the best!

I have a yellow/green t3 transporter, and was recently starting to flirt with old ideas about getting a beetle.
Unfortunately i have to ask for a favour straight away, the beetle plans have to wait as i found myself in trouble to bring my beloved t3 into the country, i mean with plates and insurance etc.
it just doesnt seem that easy,
if there is an appropriate place in this forum to discuss this could anyone tell me where please?. I searched for something like it but couldnt find anything...
i can tell the full story there...and what i have already found out, and what has confused me...

Your best bet would be to call into the vrt office (I think it's in riverhouse opposite locke bar) and talk to someone. I'm sure they'll be able to help you.
Don't forget to pop along to the Limerick show at the Unigolf grounds (beside UL) on 29th. It's always a good show.

Hi all;

I am Mike and i help minding  &  maintaining Ann Marie's,  BillieJean, a '89 1.9Dsl  T25 in Marsala Red  with a re-conditioned '97 1.9Dsl 1Y engine slotted in instead of its 1.6TD original , whew that was a mouthfull.  BillieJean, the T25 that is,  is definately female and has bags of personality but responds well to a gentle touch.
The almost  inaccessible  :o  kitchen water pump just changed, no broken finger nails or swear words used as she is a lady. New 12V control panel next followed by 'Fridge on Gas' sort out.
If i am either  very good or very bad .....i get to drive her ocasssionaly  :) which as Americans say is a 'win win' situation

Howya - I'm a long time lurker, sometime poster and (finally) an owner, but I've only just noticed this thread. We were at the Powerscourt meet, in a car (with the outlaws van), but we're now the proud owners of 77 LHD bay called Bart. It is a westie, but a previous owner ripped out the original interior, so on top of learning about mechanics I'm in the process of replacing the interior - the old office press (with hole for cables) just isn't doing it for us! It has the original 2litre Type 4 engine at the moment, which is showing signs of age according to the experts!

Anyway, I'll be the one asking stupid mechanical questions on the forum... I'm struggling with the Haynes manual - I've been recommended the John Bentley Service Manual, but will this go over my head too? Is the John Muir book the solution? Or will I just get them all  ;D

Hi all - new on here and to the T2 game from Donegal, have meself half a late Bay LHD bus, needs plenty of work on it -so any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. Bus looks to us to be a US import that has been left to its own devices and the elements for a few years - has no plates or log book so any thoughts on how to go about making it legal again will be noted ???. Also anyone know good parts suppliers up this end of the country???

Looking forward to my new life in a camper, graduating from the tent/hostel circuit! :D

Oh and can anyone point me to a thread with favourite wild-camping spots - have been looking but haven;t located one yet.. Found a nice one down crookhaven last week, nestled in behind the no camping sign -  :D Ya gotta love west Cork!

Hi Samir and Dee here.

We've been (quiet) members for a while and have previously met some of you at Vantastival but thought it was about time we said a proper hello.

Hello  :)

We have a lovely 1971 Dormobile which was lovingly restored by Caddy and took us around France for a month this summer.  Her name is Betty and she will be spending the weekend in a field in Stradbally so say hello if you see her.

Here are a couple of pics from France

And thought we'd include this cos it is nice even though it refuses to either rezise or rotate for us!

I'm Fergus - the fof half of Joffof, my wife June is the other half ( jof ).

Always wanted to buy a bus, and decided to do it now while kids are small enough to enjoy it. 'Discussed' it with the wife, who put her foot down, stating "no rusty bus is sitting in the drive on blocks" ( I had history here before with an upsidedown  mini on a mattress in the garden for a few months )

I charged on with the sale of 3 bikes to fund the purchase, and she wondered what I was doin, sure hadnt we agreed there would be no bus...

Well, no, we'd agreed there wouldnt be a rusty bus up on blocks

I bought a bus from Krazi Kombis - John is doing some welding, and then I'll do some spanner work. Already theres been a turnaround from the other half, and shes looking forward to getting the bus and getting away in it

Thats great, but I also here talk of 'our' bus, and what 'We' are going to do to it.....

Whats yours is mine....!!

Hi everyone, I'm Geoff. Based in Monaghan and into T25s - have been for quite a while. I'm more into the vans than forums but don't hold that against me :)

I live near Carrickmacross and I'm doing up an 84 T25 at the moment...

Thanks for the welcome everyone and good to hear from some locals! I'm nearer to Enniskillen than Keady - near Clones. Boatbuilder - I'm doing a rest on an 82 caravelle at the minute - you're welcome to see it some time if you want.

Hi, I'm Ramshaw983 and a 'Newbie' to your club. As background, I used to own a ( 22 ?? ) window splitty and also a bay and my business partner  Gary, used to run a 3.4 V6 bus and a Scooby powered bus
when he lived in Zimbabwe. We have recently decided to look out for a ' badly in need of attention' Splitty to restore, slam and use as our works bus.
If anybodies got one or knows of one for sale maybe you'd give me the nod.
My business is low pressure blasting and Zinc Thermal spraying for classic cars and bikes. We are currently working on 2 bay buses and a dune buggy and will have progress pictures and details of the work being
carried out on our website www.thermalspraying very soon if anyone is interested.
I'm amazed at the passion, the following and the friendship that old VW's create. Having worked on hundreds of cars of most marques, I can honestly say that you bunch seem to have the most fun with what you
run. Hopefully, we will obtain our splitty soon and you'll let us join in.
Thanks

Was put onto ye after a traumatic day yesterday.. had a T25 sale agreed.. In pretty good nick and all.. Rang John(methinks) in KrazyKombi's to inquire about a new rear seat and was amazed by the info (about rear seats, home conversions and the dreaded DOE).. So quickly ran away from said t25 :(

Hopefully I'll be on often.

Hi folks,
Liam here. My wife (Vicky) and I just bought a 1979 T2 which is a bit on the rough side (a fair amount of filler), but we love it! It's now with Joe at Cosy Classics who's giving it a once over (and already has a list as long as my arm for repairs needed)!
Looking forward to getting stuck in and getting my hands dirty and possibly pulling my hair out and all of that!
Hopefully we'll meet most of you over the next year or so!
P.S. I'm pretty sure I'll be back on here soon looking for decent second hand parts!
All the best,
Liam.

Hi all,

So here goes, the name is Maurice, I'm in Dublin and I've taken the plunge! I recently bought a project in the form of an '84 high-top camper.
It needs lots of work, from a somewhat sickly 1.6D engine to the usual seam rot, but I'm slowly making some progress, hoping (optimistically) to have it on the road in another 6 weeks or so. I also got an '86 pick-up (without engine) as part of the deal so that may yet become another project, along with the wife's Beetle engined trike which is patiently awaiting a full rebuild  :).

Whilst I'm new to this particular model my first 2 cars were '73 & '67 Beetles so I'm not unfamiliar with some restoration work, I've also done a bit of bodywork on Bay window models in the distant past.

So anyway, that's my lot for now, although doubtless I'll be back posting in the coming weeks looking for advice on various bits and bobs .....

Morning all.  London based so was very surprised to see such an active Type2 Forum in Ireland.  Looking to scratch an EarlyBay itch I have had since I was about 15 and and wanted an aircooled beetle.

Planning to purchase this winter and use for summer camping - hoping for a US import left hooker.

Learing a lot - the main thing being to change the fuel lines before the bus burns down!!

well hello there,
i was pointed towards this forum here from the brickyard forums.

My name is Tom, i'm from germany and will be spending the 4 months from sept. to jan. on your beautiful island in the tralee region.

I will be accompanied by a good friend of mine who is also a typ2 enthusiast and ye trusty ole vanagon called betty:

So if there are any typ2 drivers around tralee and you spot this black van of exquisity, feel free to honk, wave or leave a # under the windscreen wiper.

Also, IF something brakes one that one, i hope we could arrange for some place to "fix" her up, then.

cheers,
Tom

Figured I might as well throw up an intro here. Went over to look at a certain blue bus with funny backwards opening doors and ended up making a deal on it:)Found a few jobs that need doing, bit of a hole in the drivers side wheelarch, door seals need replacing, bottom of the windscreen pillars have some surface rust on the inside(gap between window rubber and pillar) and the sil needs replacing. Aside from a bit of a clean and some new carpets shouldnt take too much to get it back on the road.If anybody has any other info on it would be a great help.

Simon.

Newbie here. Kerryman living in Dublin 5. Just started working on a T2 bay delivery van 1977. I have plans to put in a golf 1.6 engine and gearbox and then convert to camper after of course a few years welding. I'd like to pick yer brains with regards best place to buy panels and another other advise would be much appreciated.

Hi my name is Graham from Dublin 5, and I have a 1977 T2, which was converted to use as a camper in June this year by Joe at Cosy Classics. We've had a few trips this summer around Ireland / UK, and plan hopefully to bring it to France next year.  The bus was registered in the Free State Province of South African as a Kombi with a 2.0L type 4 engine, looking forward to learning loads and having fun along the road :D

Hi all,

Aisling here, recently imported a T25 westy joker, and despite anticipating a huge import fee I'm loving it so far. It's my first van, and I love the design of the Westfalias - it's all so German and efficient :)
Can't wait til the weather gets better and can take it out more!

Hi,

Not really a newbie but a prodigal son returned!

I have just moved from Coleraine in the North, to Kinsale.

Up to my ears getting all the various vehicles legalised which is turning out to be complicated!

Just got the van insured today and an appointment with the Revenue in Cork on Wednesday to sort out the Vrt exemption. After that a Vrt inspection and then a Nct inspection if I have my understanding correct.

Hi to all here,
well as the title suggests Im new here , and here goes, well Im from Cork and i recently bought myself what Im told is an English impotred 1980 westy, In a nutshell I bought a bucket of bits on wheels......, (typical of me jump in where others RUN for the hills)
This really is a project build and the deaper ive gone into it the more I see is missing

Any hoo,, Ive rebuilt an 80's Mini 2 years back , so welding , body work, engine or electrics dont frighten me , the difference as I see it so far is the Mini parts seem to be much more readily available both nos and second hand.
Here is my problem , If i buy new or repro parts for this Van it will cost me more than a new Van, So can anyone tell me where I might get good quality second hand parts at  reasonable prices.
The most urgent part for now is the Front face or clip, I want to get her sealed up before the winter sets in , Also need a dash including clocks

your thinking here typical Cork rebal looking for free info on a first post , but seriously and info would be most gratefully appreciated,

Unlike the Mini I did , I really would like to be able to use this Van once its done and not have to sell it after Ive finished

Cheers  Paul C

Hello forum members. I have recently returned to NI after few years and Ruby T, my 1971 Beetle will very soon follow so I am keen to join the V Dub community here. I have enjoyed many of the events in England and Europe...the latest Beautiful Budel in Holland was a fantastically chilled and friendly event. Ruby T was there and I am home without her for time being but can't wait to be reunited....so it's all things Bug at the minute. Anyway looking forward to hearing of the events this side of the pond we can both attend.

Larry here from New Ross, Co Wexford

I don't have a type 2, but I bought my first VW van last January: a 2001 VW T4 2.5tdi. I put 6 months of work into getting her restored (sounds bad having to restore a 12 year old van but I will throw up a few pics later to show you what I mean) and now she is a daily driver for me.

I call him Mr Skittles (the first vehicle I have had that isn't a 'her' !! )

Hi Everyone!  Dec here ... I aquired a 'lovely' t25 camper at the end of 2012.  It's a bucket of pure sh*te  :D, don't get me wrong ... it has poetential, I love VWs ... it's just mine that's rubbish  :P

Oh ... and it's Pink  :-[ .. well Fucia or Cerise, and has funny long windows that were butchered into the side ... It's pretty unique :).  I've got most of the butterflies peeled off now and the 'shag pile' purple carpeting is all but gone now.  The interior is mostly habitable now, I think we've had 2 weekends away so far, but my heart has been broken with the Solex's... Hopefully that's being addressed as we speak.

Figured I'd say hello anyway, as I reckon I'll need lots of help with it.  You might see it wandering between Maynooth and Westport - AA truck optional.

I don't have a photo storage doodah y'see.  Anyway - taht was last year when it was relatively shiny - I seem to remember it came home on a flatbed too.  At the moment it needs a damn good cleaning and it really needs roof off windows out re-furb.  It's in getting some webers at the moment, then I need to find a shed I can work on it in (sigh).

God Bless your eyesight Louie - I can barely make out my own girlfriend in that pic - but she is indeed a hotty - I'll tell her she's famous :D

El Pinkio is a tad rusty & needs a good scrub after the winter.  The pics really do make it look good .. it's a tad crusty in the flesh, but I do have to say - when it actually runs, it's great fun to drive and makes me smile.

I really need to find somewhere I can pull the roof off and do some (lots of) patching up at some stage.  Can't wait to get it out for a spin this year.

It's out with Lorcan at the moment - he filled my head with dreams of tidy syncro westys - the evil fecker.

Hello there everyone!  My name is Gerard McStocker I am from Co. Antrim and am in the process of restoring a 1986 T25 Panel van.  I would very much appreciate any help or advice seeking parts.  The van is in the body shop totally stripped out for repainting.  I intend to change the colour from blue to Mars or Tornado red.  I am also going to fit a 1.9 diesel engine replacing the 1.6 diesel that was in there. I would like a pair of captain seats the T25 seats are expensive I know there is a relatively easy swap for Saab 95 seats but I would very much like captain type seats.  Any ideas much appreciated.

 Hi All,
let me introduce myself I'm Robbie and I have been a Vw fan all my life ( thanks to Tommy Fields) my old scout leader who had the sweetest T2 I have ever seen, in the past I have had a 77 T1 and a 85 type 25 but at present my growing family have put the brakes on my VW ownership....  Hopefully not for long :-\

Hi guys, not sure if I can class myself as a newbie as I've been around before, but not for a while. I've lost contact with you all due to me giving up Facebook and busy being a dad to 2 little VW mad girls. I've been planning on getting back up to the Isle of Man for Circle yer wagons, but work and family commitments make that very difficult, but on the plus side I am coming over to Ireland in a few weeks time for 16days. Starting with a trip up to Dublin to see family before heading down to West Cork to see Kats family at the end of the holiday, just wondered if anybody could recommend a good route or places to see on the way through. I've been across to Westport before and all around Kerry (but that doesn't mean that I don't mind seeing it all again) is there any  nice spots worth checking out in the middle....... Seems a bit daft me asking you guys when I'm married to a West Cork but she gets lost leaving Ballydehob and she's been away from Ireland for far to long now.
Anyway hope your all well especially Louie, Caroline, Dave and family? If any of you guys are out and about on my travels it would be great to catch up for a brew or even something colder. Take care for now.
Adam....... (Aka Trades).

Hi, I am touring from Manchester in a whitish on red splitty panel van, in Clon currently,  heading to Galway via Kerry. I could do with a vw knowledgeable garage fairly soon to check my gearbox oil level and top up if anyone has a recommended one, I would appreciate it.  Hi to all anyway.

Why do you think it needs a top up? Is it whining?

A top up is a simple job that any garage could do for you.

Where in Cork are you based westynut?  I'm in Cork, and prefer to bring mine to John of KrazyKombis.com in Kilmaganny as he knows my engine inside out literally.  Worth travelling a bit for!!

A few here use Sean Hanley Motors aka The Lough Service Station, and find them pretty handy too.

Share some pics with us of Daphne, would love to see her.

Hello T2 People!

I've just recently bought a 1972 T2 Kombi which was imported from South Africa. She needs a fair amount of work done, but not a lot of bodywork thankfully. I'm based in North Donegal right now, so anyone with bits and bobs on sale for these I'd love to come and look at what you have. Also looking for a nice mechanic up here that is into T2s, so all suggestions appreciated.

Hiya, welcome along. Congrats on the new bus, post up a pic, we'd love to see her. There are a good few on here from around donegal, and Emy is Derry based, he could be a handy mechanic for you. Certainly got me out of a hole when I was stuck in innishowen last Easter.

You're right. Built in SA, likely a CKD from what I've found out.

At the moment, I'm looking to hire a mechanic to do some sorting out her. She's a 1972 Low Light Kombi, and I want to get her driving comfortable. Runs pretty well but currently not idling, lights are weak and not all working, and a few other bits that I'd like to get sorted professionally before I start doing the lighter stuff myself.

Do you take work on these busses yourself or can you recommend an enthusiast mechanic up this way?
